One of the most commonly seen forms property damage caused by trees is roof damage due to contact with tree limbs!

Our Arborists see this all the time and one would be surprised how small a branch it takes to wear a hole through shingles and even metal roofs. The cost of roof repairs can well exceed the cost of tree trimming, especially if the proper clearance of your roof is the only tree trimming maintenance you care to manage.

           What is a Safe Distance?

A minimum of 3’ of distance is considered an industry standard from an insurance standpoint. There may be exceptions to this rule however, such as when a large trunk or lead of a tree is closer than that. The larger parts of a tree are moved quite less by the wind and would be much less likely to brush against the building in question. A close inspection of the potential contact point on the structure is the best way to determine if a tree has begun to touch during a windstorm. If there are marks on either the building or the tree, it is bound to only get worse with time.

How Often Should I Inspect My Roof?

If you have established at least a 3’-5’ of clearance off your roof, it is usually 2-3 years before most tree would have grown close again. There are large shrubs or bamboo grasses that grow quite a bit faster than that though. If you have landscapes that include large shrubs, grasses or fast-growing trees such as Chinaberry or Tallow Trees, it would be advisable to make an annual check of your roof-line.

According the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons in a study done in 2004, every year 500,000 people are treated for ladder-related injuries and approximately 300 of these incidents prove to be fatal. In 2007 alone, more than 400 people died as a result of falls on or from ladders or scaffolding. In 2014, there were 647 fatal falls showing an increase in the frequency of this kind of accident. Of those, 340 involved falls from 20 feet or less.

What Can You Do If Tree Branches Are Hanging Over Your Home?

Trees are beautiful and they can add a lot of value to your property; however, trees can also grow very large and stand tall over your home and pose a risk to you and your home. In general, trees are an asset for your property. Besides adding value, trees provide shade, beauty, and a cool breeze on hot days. If you live in an older home, you likely have older, taller trees that have branches, which are hanging over your home. Hanging branches can be dangerous when they hang over your roof, garage, and cars.

Overhanging branches are always a risk when over your home or part of your property. Why are these branches such a problem? Overhanging branches can scrape your roof shingles and strip layers of asphalt off. These branches can drop a lot of leaves into the gutter, which can lead to leaks, deterioration, and mold. These branches can also break and fall onto your roof, windows, garage, cars, your neighbor’s property, or even hit a person.

How can you avoid these overhanging branches? First, try to never plant a tree too close to your home. Now, if you already have a large tree with overhanging branches, you need to maintain the tree by consistently trimming the branches. Trimming branches close to your home can be a hard task. If you aren’t comfortable with trimming a tree, you risk dropping a branch onto your home and causing damage to your property. Also, most homeowners do not have the proper equipment, tools, and ladders to trim branches. A tree care professional is equipped and trained in all types of tree trimming, so he/she can safely trim branches that are close to your home.

Branches can fall at any time for many reasons. Strong winds. Hurricanes. Tree diseases. If you have a hanging tree branch, be proactive. Get the branch trimmed or at least get the branches and tree evaluated so you know the health and strength of the tree.

How a Drought Can Affect Your Trees

In Florida, droughts often happen during the dry season, which is in the winter. Throughout Jacksonville, Florida, the dry season has brought up hundreds of wildfires all across the state due to the trees and forests being so dry.

What does a drought do to your tree? Trees need water to thrive and survive just like humans. When a tree lacks water, it can become weak, damaged and may even die. Trees that are already weak may not stand a chance against a drought. Whole forests can be burned up because of a drought. When severely dehydrated, a tree is not healthy and cannot fight off pests, weather damage, and diseases.

On average, if a tree experiences stress from a drought, it can take five years (or more) for the tree to recover. In some cases, trees can never recover from a drought. A drought can keep a tree from growing or keep a tree in a dormant state. Many trees stressed from a drought often never fully grow.

How Can a Drought Damage a Tree?

A drought can cause both short-term and long-term damage to a tree. Short-term damage a tree can experience from a drought includes leaf scorch, defoliation, and wilting. Long-term damage can experience from a drought includes branch die-back, stunted growth, and death. You may not even notice damage to your tree until three years after the drought occurred, believe it or not.

If your area is going through a drought, it’s important to consistently monitor your trees. Keep your tree’s roots moist as much as you can, unless there is a water ban. Water your trees as much as the ban will allow. Weed regularly so the weeds aren’t stealing water from the trees. Put nutrients into the soil, if lacking, to help the tree stay strong.

Our team at North Florida Tree Service can determine quickly if your tree is under stress from a drought. If you’re worried about your tree, don’t ignore it. Even if it isn’t a drought and your tree is showing signs of damage or distress, you need to get help for your tree. Our team of arborists will help your tree through its stress and work hard to save it. If the tree is too far gone and is dying or dead, we will recommend the removal of the tree.
